How CBD Oil Can Improve Your Life

In this article, we look at the full benefits of CBD oil for relaxation and how CBD oil can improve your life.

What is CBD oil?

Cannabidiol (CBD oil), is a non-intoxicating chemical located in the cannabinoid family that occurs in the cannabis plant. There is believed to be as many as 104 different types of these cannabinoids in cannabis. CBD oil was first discovered by Dr. Roger Adams and his team at the University of Illinois in 1940. The oil was not fully brought to light, however, until 1963. In recent years the media has caught on to the growing popularity of the natural remedy which has as a result seen a rise in demand for it.

What is it used for?

When consumed CBD oil induces feelings of tiredness and tranquility, making it a suitable treatment for insomnia and other sleep disorders. The relaxing effect of the oil means it can also be used to treat symptoms of epilepsy, chronic pain, arthritis, diabetes, and anxiety disorders.

How does it feel?

People who take CBD oil speak of a “body” high, as opposed to a mind-altering high produced from the THC found in Marijana. “Physically, it’s like taking a warm bath, melting the tension away,” said Gabe Kennedy, 27, a founder of Plant People, a start-up in New York that sells CBD capsules and oils. “It is balancing; a leveling, smoothing sensation in the body mostly, and an evenness of attention in the mind.”

How does it work?

CBD oil works by interacting with the body's endocannabinoid system, which is a regulatory system made up of naturally occurring cannabis-like molecules. The endocannabinoids work like neurotransmitters, sending messages through the body to help maintain homeostasis. CBD interacts with two receptors in the endocannabinoid system called CB1 receptors and CB2 receptors.

CB1 receptors are present throughout the whole body. The CB1 receptors in the brain deal with a whole host of functions like coordination, movement, pain, emotions, and mood, thinking, appetite, and memories, and other functions. CB2 receptors are more commonly found in the immune system. They affect inflammation and pain. Scientists believe that when CBD oil is consumed it works by encouraging the body to produce more of its own endocannabinoids, thus helping to reduce anxiety, pain, and inflammation.

Is it safe?

A 2017 World Health Organization report found that CBD, in its pure form, is safe and well-tolerated by humans. It is reported to be highly unlikely to cause harmful effects or dependence. The National Institutes of Health have indicated that 1,500 mg of CBD has been safely taken by mouth daily for up to four weeks. The reason that CBD oil has been cleared as safe to use is that it only contains trace elements of the chemical compound known as THC which is responsible for the 'high' experienced from marijuana. When taken CBD oil is non-intoxicating which means the user experiences the benefits of relaxation without the feeling of being high or ‘stoned’.

Why is it so popular and how many people are using it?

According to the Cannabis Trades UK Association, the number of people buying CBD in the UK has doubled between 2017 and 2018 to about 250,000 people. That’s a big jump up so why has it become popular? Mr. Harry Sumnall is a professor in substance use at Liverpool University and is responsible for studying the rise of CBD consumption in the UK. Mr. Sumnall believes one reason CBD is increasing in popularity so rapidly is due to a growing awareness in the eyes of the public with the potential medical benefits. The massive media attention around the case of a young boy with epilepsy who was seemingly gaining benefits from CBD has played its part.
